Psalm 150 (Praise The Lord)

There is a marvelous group of Christian musicians in the state of Georgia called Jubal Ministries that consists of a variety of choirs and orchestras and instrumental ensembles. Not long ago they contacted me to say they wanted to really focus on developing their orchestra ministry more fully and asked me to write an orchestra arrangement of an up and coming worship song called "Psalm 150 (Praise the Lord)."

Frankly, I was not really familiar with the song, but their leader said it was catching momentum in the church, and they wanted a great arrangement that might also include the opportunity for the congregation to join in singing on the last chorus. After doing some research, I discovered that the song was written by Matt Papa and Matt Boswell - the two of them had gained a significant relationship with Keith and Kristin Getty.  Since the release of this song the two “Matt’s" have continued to write more great songs and are being promoted by the Gettys.

The gentleman who contacted me had some ideas on the structure of the arrangement and that always helps to guide me on their wishes. One of his thoughts was to include a chorus of "To God Be the Glory", and I heartily agreed. After working on the arrangement for a few hours I realized that the size and scope of the arrangement meant that the chorus of "To God Be the Glory" was actually going to be a lighter, quieter statement.

This would not be a common approach to that powerful hymn.  It turned out to actually be a break from the majesty of the "Psalm 150" melody which I think provides an interesting and refreshing moment.

As I worked toward the final statement of the melody and chorus of "Psalm 150", I made sure to choose a key that is easily singable by the congregation and it really works!

The subtitle of the song is "Praise the Lord" and I truly feel like doing exactly that when I sing it.
